Software as a service (SaaS) is a software delivery model in which software is licensed on a subscription basis and is centrally hosted. SaaS is considered to be part of cloud computing, along with several other as a service business models. SaaS apps are typically accessed by users of a web browser (a thin client). Customers access the application over the internet using a web browser or mobile device. The vendor is responsible for all aspects of the software, including security, availability, and performance.

SaaS offers a number of advantages over traditional on-premises software, including:

  • Affordability: SaaS applications are typically less expensive to purchase and maintain than on-premises software. This is because the vendor spreads the cost of development and maintenance across all of its customers.
  • Scalability: SaaS applications are easy to scale up or down as needed. This is because the vendor has the infrastructure in place to support a large number of users.
  • Ease of use: SaaS applications are typically easy to use and do not require any installation or configuration. Users can access the application from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Automatic updates: SaaS applications are automatically updated by the vendor, so users do not have to worry about keeping their software up to date.
